How does this all end? Well, get out your calendars, as we have set the dates for next year’s edition of the ’68 golf trip, back to Bandon Dunes. The dates will be November 1-5, Monday through Friday. You may want to plan to arrive in the Bandon area on Sunday October 31-yes, I know that is Halloween, but the rationale is simple-be in the area Sunday night, so that you can arrive at Bandon Dunes Monday morning for the first round, then check-in for the remainder of the week. Courses 2, 3 and 4 will then be played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with departure either Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. We don’t check in at Bandon until Monday, as that is the date when the rates drop. Perhaps, if John Blair can convince the resort to extend the reduced rates to our group for the 31st, we could then stay at the resort. If not, there are lodging options in town or in North Bend, about 20 miles north. If you have any questions about this past trip, or the one we are planning next year, email John Blair , Jim Noyes or Ed Heald -please be sure to keep me in your loop so that I can keep track of who is interested. In addition to those classmates who were on this first trip, all of whom are, at this time, planning to return next year, we have already heard from Dana Waterman, Clark Wadlow, Chuck Woodworth and Gerry Rinehart and his wife, all of whom have expressed an interest in being part of next year’s trip. I know personally that I am also planning on bringing my younger son with me next year. Others who have mentioned a potential interest are Rich Williams and Rick Thorner. I have designated the classmates who participated in the first trip as “founders” and the executive committee for the future of class golf trips. We have spent considerable time while together in a group discussing what we do next for a class golf trip, and the vote has been unanimous-that being to return here next year at this same time for the next class golf trip. The quality of the golf facilities, the lodging and the ambiance of the place cannot be matched anywhere in the States. While it is a haul to get here, the reward for doing so is such that the travel is more that offset by the destination. The reason for holding the trip this same time (approximately) next year is also financial, as the room rates and greens fees drop significantly on November 1. Here is what is being planned for next year: John Blair will be placing on hold lodging and tee times for 20 classmates about this time next year. We will also likely be accompanied by four additional people who are those with us on this trip, for a total of 24; Once reservations are made, the slots will be available on a first come, first served to classmates. You should be aware that just about all of us on this first trip have already indicated to John that we are in for next year; At some point next year, John will be calling for deposits to confirm your reservation. That will be the critical time to respond promptly with a check to John to reserve your spot for the trip. Due to the potential size of the group, it will be likely that we will be playing different courses simultaneously, so that not all of us will play the same course on the same day, but rest assured, we all will play all four of the courses here over the span of four golf days. You should also be aware that most of us have utilized caddies, who we find essential for the navigation of the courses, and are fun guys as well. Golfing spouses are most welcome, but be sure to understand that here, it is golf, eat, sleep, with little else to do. Let me know of any questions you may have, and I welcome your thoughts and feedback about our thinking. This has been a magical trip so far, and promises to continue so in the days that remain. I do hope you can see fit to join us for the next trip. If you have not been here before, I do encourage you to visit the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort web site (http://www.bandondunesgolf.com/) as that will give you an excellent introduction to everything that is here. Few people in the world have been able to bring a vision to life in the same manner that Mike Keiser has done. If you love golf, you owe it to yourself to come join us here next year, as it will be memorable to say the least. |
